Josef Sudek (1896-1976)

PORTRAIT OF MISS V. K.

1923
Vintage gelatin silver print on matte paper contemporarily adjusted on exhibition board, 27,8x21,2 cm (cardboard 39,5 x 30,4 cm). Signed in pencil lower right on cardboard on the recto, annotated in ink by Jaromír Funke on the verso: "J. Sudek - Kolin - Dolni 126 - Czechoslovakia. / Portrait "Mis K." / bromide. / 1924 Toronto Salon of Photography. Page 127 No 428 / Bradford Salon 1925. Page 55. No 432" Josef Sudek lost his right hand during World War I, and his left-hand writing was quite unreadable (except for his calligraphic signature used in the 1920s, which can be seen in this photograph as well). Presumably, that`s why he asked his friend, another excellent photographer, Jaromír Funke, to annotate the photograph he submitted to international photographic salons with Funke`s neat handwriting.
